Marc Chagall’s Illustrations for Gogol’s “Dead Souls” at the Tel Aviv Museum of Art

In the spring of 1931, Marc Chagall set sail for a visit in
Eretz-Israel. He had been invited by Tel Aviv Mayor Meir Dizengoff, following
their acquaintance in Paris in 1930. Chagall was taken with Dizengoff’s passion
to establish a museum in the emerging Jewish city, and agreed to join the Paris
Committee set up to promote the project. Chagall brought a gift, his
series of prints illustrating Nikolai Gogol’s novel Dead Souls. The series was
personally dedicated to Dizengoff, and was intended to enrich the collection of
the museum, due to open in 1932.

LONDON.- Sotheby’s is delighted to announce that
it will offer for sale the recently rediscovered oil on canvas Self-Portrait
with a Black Eye, circa 1978, by the celebrated British artist Lucian Freud (b.
1922) in its London Evening Sale of Contemporary Art
on
Wednesday, February 10, 2010.
The self-portrait, which headlines a
group of five important works by the artist in the auction that have come from a
private European collection, has never been recorded in the published literature
on Lucian Freud and has remained in the same collection for over 30 years since
its conception. Never-before exhibited in public, this rare work ranks
as the artist’s most important self-depiction ever to appear at auction and is
estimated at £3-4 million.

DALLAS, TX.- The second annual Dallas Art Fair
presented by Veuve Clicquot will return to the city on Friday, February 5
through Sunday, February 7, 2010.
A preview Gala will be held on
Thursday evening, February 4, benefiting Booker T. Washington High School for
the Performing and Visual Arts. From mid-morning to early evening over the three
days of the fair, visitors may visit and purchase art from renowned art dealers
and experts from across the United States and Great Britain. Celebrating
modern and contemporary art, the 2010 Dallas Art Fair will showcase paintings,
sculpture, drawings, prints and photographs from post war artists represented by
more than 50 prominent art dealers.

NEW YORK, NY.- Romare Bearden’s vibrant mural-size tableau The
Block (1971) and related sketches and photographs will be featured at The
Metropolitan Museum of Art beginning January 15, 2010
, in a small
installation of works from the collection. The Block, an ambitious 18-foot-long
collage, celebrates the Harlem neighborhood in New York City that nurtured and
inspired so much of the artist’s life and work. On view through Spring,
2010.

LONDON.- Christie’s Post-War and Contemporary Art
Evening Sale will take place on 11 February 2010 at 7pm, and will offer 52 lots
with a total pre-sale estimate of £26,290,000 to £38,260,000.
The
auction will represent a broad spectrum of art from the last 60 years and is
highlighted by an important core group of works from the early 1960s including
the masterpiece Relief éponge or (RE47II), one of only two gold sponge
reliefs ever created by Yves Klein (estimate: £5 million to £7 million),
alongside a further important work by the artist, ANT 5, and together with major
paintings by Peter Doig, Martin Kippenberger, Raqib Shaw, Neo Rauch, Frank
Auerbach, Andy Warhol, and Nicolas de Staël among others.

exhibition of important paintings, watercolours and prints by expressionist icon
Emil Nolde.
The exhibition comprises more than thirty
paintings, watercolours and some of his most important prints.
It
brings together some of his very early prints, some of his most important works
from the Brücke years and the winters spent in Berlin from 1905 to the 1920’s.

The Museum of Modern Art, MoMA, presents Ernesto
Neto: Navedenga, an installation of the room-size sculpture Navedenga (1998) by
Ernesto Neto (born 1964)
, one of the most influential Brazilian
artists working today. Navedenga was acquired in 2007 and is on view for the
first time at the Museum from January 22 to April 26, 2010.
The
installation is organized by Doryun Chong, Associate Curator, and Nora Lawrence,
Curatorial Assistant, Department of Painting and Sculpture, The Museum of Modern
Art.

Bruce Silverstein Gallery hosts Explosive Works by German Artist Martin Denker

showing AbsoluteZero, the first New York solo show of the explosive works by
33-year-old German artist Martin Denker.
Featuring nine large-scale
pieces, interwoven and abstracted through the layering and morphing of manifold
visual sources, AbsoluteZero expands the definition of the capabilities
and expectations of photography. On view through 31 January,

Using patterns based on traditional Taiwanese textiles,

Alan Cristea Gallery announces First Major Retrospective of Bauhaus Artist Annie Albers

LONDON.- The Alan Cristea Gallery will be
presenting the first major retrospective of the prints of Bauhaus artist and
designer Anni Albers from 18 March, 2010.
The exhibition will be the
most comprehensive survey of her graphic work to date and will include nearly
every print she has made, alongside studies, photographs and source material
loaned from the Josef and Anni Albers Foundation. The exhibition will be
accompanied by the release of the catalogue raisonne of her prints – the first
major monograph on this aspect of her work.
