Picasso Show To Open Kunsthaus Zurich’s 100th Birthday

ZURICH (REUTERS).- Kunsthaus Zurich, where
Picasso had his first museum show in 1932, is celebrating its centenary
with a special program including an exhibition
showing
how contemporaries received the Spanish artist’s work.
The program kicks off on February
12 with a rare opportunity for the public to glimpse the world-renowned
collection of controversial Zurich industrialist Emil Buehrle and
culminates with a show marking the 150th anniversary of the birth of Carl
Moser, the Jugendstil building’s architect.  The museum revisits its landmark
1932 Picasso exhibition in the final months of its centenary year,
allowing the 21st century public to view his groundbreaking art afresh
with 70 works from the original show.

TOLEDO, OHIOCoinciding with Black
History Month, a compelling exhibition of iconic and powerfully moving images by
the late African-American photographer Gordon Parks is coming to the Toledo
Museum of Art.
Bare
Witness: Photographs by Gordon Parks

brings together 73 works grouped specifically by Parks himself.
The
free exhibition opens to the public on Thursday, Feb. 5, in the Canaday Gallery
and continues through April 25, 2010.

LONDON.- London Art Fair is the premier UK art fair for Modern
British and Contemporary art.
Now in its 22nd year, it features
over 100 galleries presenting the great names of 20th Century British art and
exceptional contemporary work from leading figures and emerging
talent.
This year the section
featured large scale installation, mixed media and video work, photography,
limited edition prints and multiples and contemporary painting. This year London
Art Fair also welcomed 176/Zabludowicz Collection Editions.

Infamous (and Anonymous) Banksy’s “Exit” to Premiere at Sundance Film Festival

NEW YORK, NY (REUTERS).-
The infamous (and anonymous) graffiti artist Banksy is pulling what may
be his biggest prank ever at the Sundance Film Festival — with the help of
fellow Brit Rhys Ifans.
The guerrilla pseudo-documentary “Exit Through
the Gift Shop,” billed as “A Banksy Film” and narrated by Ifans, will have its
world premiere Sunday night. The film, billed as an exploration of
“street art,” takes audiences on hairpin twists and turns as it chronicles
renegade urban artists and pranksters from around the world
.

Americans for the Arts reports Troubling Picture for Arts Organizations

The Berkshire Toy Museum is a local museum in Pittsfield, Berkshire County, Massachusetts. The Berkshire Museum has a traveling exhibit called Kids Stuff.

Washington, DC – While the number of arts organizations increased
rapidly over a recent 10-year span, the percentage of people attending arts
events declined, a new national survey by the nonprofit group Americans for the Arts reported January 20th.
This
issue of supply and demand in the arts world is a troubling one, said the
authors of the National Arts Index, because many groups have financial troubles
and people of all ages are discovering new ways to experience the arts,
including the Internet.

NEW YORk, NY.- Gagosian Gallery will present “End
of an Era”, an exhibition of new paintings and sculpture by Damien
Hirst.
The exhibition takes its title from the central sculpture in the
exhibition, a severed bull’s head with golden horns and crowned with a solid
gold disc. Suspended in formaldehyde and encased in a golden vitrine, this
totemic sculpture acts as a powerful coda to The Golden Calf (2008). On
exhibition at Madison Avenue from 30 January through 6 march
2010.

SANTA FE, NM.- New Arrivals: Works from
the Collection is an exhibition of recent acquisitions to the Museum’s
permanent collection.
New Arrivals highlights the important role
the art patron plays in developing a Museum’s collection-either through an
outright donation or partnering with the Museum in a purchase. The works in New
Arrivals: Works from the Collection will be on view for the first time
featuring favorite New Mexico artists such as Susan Rothenberg and Gunnar
Plake, among others, to the internationally recognized Francis Bacon and
Roy Lichtenstein.

Christian Boltanski Takes Up the Monumenta Challenge in 2010

PARIS.- MONUMENTA is an outstanding, ambitious artistic
encounter. Each year, a leading international contemporary artist is invited by
the Ministry of Culture and Communication to create an exceptional new work for
the 13,500 m² Nave of the Grand Palais, in the heart of Paris.
Following the success of the
first two MONUMENTA events, featuring Anselm Kiefer in 2007 and American
sculptor Richard Serra in 2008 – both of which attracted over 140,000 visitors
in five weeks – leading French artist Christian Boltanski takes up the Monumenta
challenge in 2010.
The exhibition is co-produced by the Centre national
des arts plastiques (French National Centre for the Visual Arts), the Grand
Palais and the Réunion des musées nationaux. On exhibition through 21 February,
2010.

DUBAI.- Art Dubai announced a strong selection of
more than 60 of the worlds’ most exciting emerging and established
contemporary galleries
for the fourth edition of Art
Dubai.
Whilst the selection of galleries confirms Art Dubai’s
diverse geographical connections, the fair has capitalised on the
successful introduction of solo projects in 2009 with nearly a third of
all participants now presenting exhibitions by individual artists. On view 17 through 20 March,
2010.
