NEW YORK, NY.- Susan Inglett presents
“Bearded”,
new work from GREG SMITH in his third solo exhibition with the gallery
from 30
April to 29 May 2010. The Universe is built from a simple form. That
form is
commonly understood to be an atom and the shape of that form is commonly

understood to be a sphere. For my purposes, I would prefer to see that
shape as
a beard, or at least a caricature of a beard. For better or
worse,
there are associations that go along with the beard: disguise,
masculinity,
Santa Claus, homosexuality, survivalism, fundamentalism, and wisdom, for

example. My beard shape is used to build objects, mechanical devices,
and a set;
these in turn are used to construct a range of scenarios, including
those that
are well outside (and perhaps even antagonistic toward) these familiar
associations and stereotypes.

BERLIN.- Monika Sprüth and Philomene
Magers
present an exhibition of new works by Andreas Gursky in Berlin. The
series of
works represents an important new development in Gursky’s practice in
which the
artist reassesses the way he works with photography. Like many of
Andreas
Gursky’s works, the new, six-part series Ocean I-VI (2009-2010) goes
back to a
spontaneous visual experience. As the artist relates, while
flying one
night from Dubai to Melbourne he stared for some time at the flight
monitor: the
Horn of Africa to the far left, a tip of Australia to the far right –
and there
in between the blue void. Then all of a sudden he saw the graphic
representation
on the monitor as a picture.

COLOGNE.- Max Liebermann, Lovis Corinth
and Max
Slevogt: three names that are representative of German impressionism.
Three
artists whose creative works captivate a broad public. Three masters who
are
united by one great passion: landscape painting. It is to this passion
that
the Wallraf-Richartz-Museum is devoting its very own special exhibition
in
summer 2010. Under the title “Liebermann, Corinth, Slevogt – The
Landscapes” the
museum shall be exhibiting around 90 works of these three German
impressionists.
On view 30 April through 1 August, 2010.

Sampson and Horne’s Legacy Makes Over 1 Million Pounds at Bonhams

LONDON.- Legendary English antique dealership
Sampson and Horne’s collection of British pottery and furniture went
under the
hammer (28 April) at Bonhams, New Bond Street with huge success,
achieving a
total of £1,056,000 with a 91% sold by value. The auction lasted all day
with
740 lots on offer, but the saleroom remained packed throughout with many
of
their loyal customers attending in person – a poignant reminder of their
many
visits to Sampson and Horne’s shops. While estimates had been set
cautiously, in
many cases fierce competition among private collectors meant prices in
the
auction were at retail levels.

BENTONVILLE, ARK.- The beauty of glorious
attire
and what it communicates to others is celebrated in two works of art
announced
by Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art. Mrs. Theodore Atkinson, Jr.
(1765),
an oil portrait by John Singleton Copley, considered one of the most
influential
painters in colonial America, augments an exceptional collection of
portraits by
Gilbert Stuart, Thomas Eakins and John Singer Sargent. Dress Impression
with
Wrinkled Cowl (2007) by Karen LaMonte, a leading figure among American
artists
using glass in large-scale sculptures, builds on the collection’s
emerging
strength in contemporary art.

The Oakland Museum to Show PIXAR-25 Years of Animation

The Oakland Museum of California (OMCA) will present PIXAR: 25 Years of Animation, a major exhibition of over 500 works by the artists at Pixar Animation Studios. Opens 31 July.

OAKLAND,
CA – The Oakland Museum of California (OMCA) will
present PIXAR: 25 Years
of Animation, a major
exhibition of over 500 works by the artists at Pixar Animation
Studios,
including drawings, paintings, and sculptures that illustrate the
creative
process and craftsmanship behind Pixar’s wildly successful
computer-animated films. This will be a
significantly
enhanced presentation of the exhibition, which is returning home
to
Oakland after a successful worldwide tour that began at the Museum
of
Modern Art in New York in 2005. A number of significant works will
be on
public display for the first time, including art from Ratatouille,
WALL•E, Up, and Pixar’s latest feature
film, Toy Story 3. PIXAR will
also include an updated,
awe-inspiring version of the Pixar Artscape, a widescreen media
installation. On view from July 31, 2010 through January 9, 2011,
the
exhibition will be accompanied by screenings of Pixar’s feature
and short
films; a special program of lectures, talks and workshops with
Pixar
artists; and a new and expanded exhibition catalogue.

Art and Commerce “Marry” in New Delhi

New Delhi, India – In
2008 New Delhi-based Subodh Gupta,
known for sculptures created from hundreds of pieces of shiny kitchenware,
joined the tiny list of Indian artists whose work has sold for over a million
dollars. In Delhi, it seems, art has become good work if you can get it. But
if million-dollar sculptures are out of your league, you can still admire the
stuff at one of a series of new spots around the city dedicated to the business
of marrying art with, well, business.

Anne Frank’s Full Diary on Display at the House Where She Wrote It

AMSTERDAM (AP).- Nearly all of Anne Frank’s diary
went on display for the first time at the Dutch house where she wrote it
during
the two years the Jewish teenager was in hiding from the Nazis. The
notebooks
and pages that comprise the World War II diary have been moved into the
Anne
Frank House museum to mark 50 years since it opened its doors to the
public.
Dutch Queen Beatrix opened the exhibition, then attended a commemoration
at the
17th century Western Church a few dozen steps from museum.
