Bonhams to Sell Portrait of Greatest Pre-Nelson Military Hero

Attributed to the Circle of Joseph Highmore - 'Portrait of General James Wolfe' - Estimate: £80,000-120,000. Photo: Bonhams.

LONDON.- A portrait of General James Wolfe
set
against the Plains of Abraham at Quebec where he heroically lost his
life in a
battle against the French is expected to fetch £80,000-120,000 when it
is
auctioned at the Old Master Paintings sale on Wednesday 7th July at
Bonhams, New
Bond Street. William Pitt the Elder appointed Wolfe to lead the British
assault
on Quebec in 1759.
The resulting Battle of the Plains of
Abraham (or
the Battle of Quebec) is one of the most celebrated events in British
military
history and a pivotal victory in the Seven Years’ War. The
confrontation, which
began on 13 September 1759, was fought between the British Army and
Navy, and
the French Army, on a plateau just outside the walls of Quebec City.

Greek Police Seize Two Rare Statues From Two Farmers

ATHENS (AP).- Police in southern Greece
have seized a rare twin pair of 2,500-year-old marble statues and
arrested two
farmers who allegedly planned to sell them abroad for €10 million
($12.43
million), authorities said. Police said two Greeks aged 42 and 48 were
arrested
in the Peloponnese area late Friday as they were loading the illegally
excavated
figures of young men into a truck. Authorities are seeking a third man
suspected
of belonging to a smuggling gang that planned to spirit the 6th century
B.C.
works out of the country.
The statues are of the stiff, highly
formalized Kouros type widespread in the 7th and 6th centuries B.C.
which
portrayed gods, heroes or aristocrats and were painted in bright colors.
From
the 5th century on, Greek sculpture became more fluid and lifelike,
culminating
in the naturalism of the Hellenistic era.

ISTANBUL.- Suna and İnan Kıraç Foundation
Pera
Museum welcomed one of the most exceptional artists of the 21st century,

Fernando Botero in İstanbul for the very first time with an exhibition
comprising a selection of 64 works. Botero’s art is not exclusively a
narration
or a representation, but brings with it the force of an inner vision, of
his
knocking on life’s door. Protecting his Latin and Colombian identity,
Botero has
succeeded forming his own style nourished not only by folkloric elements
but
also by the works of grand masters, and has poured his rich inner world
into his
works with a sophisticated, humorous and wise approach.
From
acrobats
to matadors, dancing people to naked lovers, cardinals to sad clowns and
to
musicians, the exhibition invites us to discover Botero’s lyricism and
his
enchanting world.
