The Herbert Art Museum Named ‘Most Friendly’ by Undercover Judges

The Herbert Art Gallery exhibition shows artists redefining their place in the world, and making propositions about the present, and by implication, their future.

Undercover trips by a team of judges, with their children, led to the crowning today of the
Herbert Art
Gallery and Museum in Coventry as the winner of this year’s Guardian family friendly museum of the
year award. The
museum – celebrating its 50th birthday this year – came out top when it
assessed against the 20-point Kids in Museums manifesto, a template
designed to get
all museums to think more about how good at family visits they are. The
began in 2004, driven by the journalist Dea Birkett, who was horrified
to be
turfed out of the Royal Academy’s Aztec exhibition when her son pointed
at a
scary exhibit and shouted: “Monster!”
