NEW YORK, N.Y. – The Statue of Liberty will close for a year at the end of October as it undergoes a $27.25 million renovation that will make the interior safer and more accessible, U.S. Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar announced Wednesday. The renovations are limited to the monument only, and Liberty Island will remain open and the statue itself will be mostly unobstructed from view, officials said in a statement. The Statue of Liberty is showing her age, and plans to have a little work done. She celebrates her 125th birthday in October with all the fanfare befitting such a grande dame, and then will close to the public for a year while the National Park Service does some nipping and tucking.
