Shifts in Horizon: Perspectives on Landscape
A Week-long Workshop | June 1–8, 2012
Accepting Applications March 30–April 30, 2012

Prompted by the immediate environment and history of the Marin Headlands’ landscape itself, Shifts in Horizon is an opportunity to envision and interpret the terrain around us. Led by Bay Area-based photographers Sean McFarland (AIR ‘11), Christina Seely (AIR ‘11), and Michael Light; designer and publisher Jason Fulford; SFMOMA Assistant Curator Lisa Sutcliffe; and a diverse group of other facilitators, this workshop examines the subject of landscape representation through the photographic lens. Both hands-on and conceptually-oriented, participants explore the rich and complex local terrain, developing multiple viewpoints by land and by sea, through guided walks, photography-specific discussions, a natural history lecture, speculative histories, and field experiments. Participants utilize both antique technologies, such as the camera obscura, along with new frontiers in digital photo manipulation; all pointing toward an expanded perspective on contemporary landscape.

Additional Details:

No photographic training required, a brief tutorial will be offered
Interest in concepts of landscape representation is essential
Bring your favorite gear, from disposable cameras to the high tech: laptops, film, printers, etc. Not required
