LIMA, PERU – A new species of ‘killer’
sperm whale with fearsome teeth
that roamed the seas more than 12 million years ago has been discovered
by
scientists. The fossilized skull and jaw of the
gigantic
creature, which was 43 foot long with a 10 foot head, were found off the
coast
of Peru. It is believed the creature would have
preyed on
other whales as it boasted 14 inch teeth. Dubbed Leviathan Melvillei
–after
Herman Melville the author of the fictional Moby Dick – it has been
described in
the journal Nature as the largest fossil sperm whale ever found.
