London.- Messum’s Fine Art is delighted to present an exhibition of paintings by Alan Cotton. Using a palette knife exclusively, Cotton shapes his bold views of Devon, Cornwall, Skye, Piedmonte, Provence and even New Zealand with a deftness and variety of handling, transforming the picturesque into the dramatic. His soaring views of cliff, bay, hill town and vineyard are painted in immediately tangible strokes, using dazzling contrasts of colour and value in an effort to share with the viewer the artists’s own ‘gut reaction’ to a specific time and place. “Alan Cotton” is on view at the gallery from September 14th through October 1st. The artist’s never-ending search for new and stimulating material has led him on challenging expeditions across the globe. Cotton is equally an intrepid explorer of the possibilities of oil paint and his paintings possess a uniquely tangible quality so immediate and sensual that the viewer often feels immersed in his landscapes.
