Chen Shuxia: The Robert H. N. Ho Family Foundation Greater China Curatorial Residency Programme 2014 Grantee
Awarded curatorial proposal:
From Socialist Realism to Social Reality: April Photo Society, 1976-1989
The Robert H. N. Ho Family Foundation Greater China Curatorial Residency Programme offers a one-year fellowship to support scholars and curators interested in developing historical or research-oriented art exhibitions relating to contemporary art in China. The grantee will be awarded a total of 15,000 USD and is expected to spend up to two months conducting research at AAA and carry out fieldwork in the Greater China region.
Among the 42 applications received from an open call, the panel of judges recommends Chen Shuxia’s proposal for its relevancy to AAA’s China collection, its feasibility as a research and exhibition project, and its focus on a historically significant but insufficiently researched topic. The panel of judges is also impressed by Chen’s substantial research experience and feels that her proposal has the potential to develop into a highly original curatorial project.
Chen’s project “aims to develop an exhibition examining the transition in Chinese photography from Mao era’s Socialist Realism to a humanistic concern for social reality during the 1980s. By analyzing the photographic works and writing of key members of the seminal group, April Photo Society, this transformation could be evidenced both in the choice of subject matter and the aesthetic of their photographs. Despite carrying a certain rhetoric from Socialist Realism, the April Photo Society’s images started to reflect on the nature of ‘real life’ and society as a direct result of the 1976 Tiananmen Incident. By studying the activities of these photographers through exhibitions and publications they produced, this research also seeks to position their unofficial role as a method to resist and later collaborate with the state in order to fulfill the transformation to social reality.” The research and exhibition will also “demonstrate how these photographic actors self-organized a collective to navigate between newly available social and cultural spaces; how certain individuals responded to the communal space of the group as well as the broadening public sphere during the first decade of China’s reform era.”
