ISEA2012 Albuquerque: Machine Wilderness – Re-envisioning Art, Technology and Nature, The 18th International Symposium on Electronic Art (ISEA)

The prestigious ISEA symposium is held every year in a different location around the world, and has a 30-year history of significant acclaim. ISEA2012 will consist of a conference September 19–24, 2012 based in Albuquerque, and an expansive, regional collaboration throughout the fall of 2012, including art exhibitions, public events, performances and educational activities. This project will draw a wealth of leading creative minds from around the globe, and engage our local community through in-depth partnerships.
The exhibition will feature artworks that combine art, science and technology, demonstrating the role art can play in re-envisioning the world. ISEA2012 guest jurors include: Kate Bonansinga Director, The Gerald and Stanlee Rubin Center for the Arts at The University of Texas – El Paso; Steve Dietz , Founder, President & Artistic Director of Northern Lights.mn, Founding Director of the 01SJ Biennial, 2006 , and Former Curator of New Media at the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis; Irene Hofmann, Director/Curator, SITE Santa Fe, New Mexico; Nancy Marie Mithlo , Associate Professor, Department of Art History and American Indian Studies Program, University of Wisconsin – Madison; and Giselle Beiguelman, Curator, 9th Art and Technology Award, Sergio Motta Institute Juror, Interactive Art, Ars Electronica 2010 and 2011, and Architecture and Urbanism Faculty, the University of São Paulo – Brazil.
Machine Wilderness references the New Mexico region as an area of rapid growth and technology alongside wide expanses of open land, and aims to present artists’ and technologists’ ideas for a more humane interaction between technology and wilderness in which “machines” can take many forms to support life on Earth. Machine
Wilderness focuses on creative solutions for how technology and the natural world can sustainably co-exist.

The lead organizations hosting ISEA2012 are 516 ARTS, The University of New Mexico and The Albuquerque Museum. Art and Ecology is an interdisciplinary, research-based program engaging contemporary art practices. Graduate students integrate community and ecological research and develop land and cultural literacy with a wide range of production skills, including sculpture, social practice, and digital media. Faculty include practicing artists Bill Gilbert, Molly Sturges, Catherine Harris, Szu Han Ho and ISEA2012 Artistic Director Andrea Polli.
